Former President Mohamed Nasheed has sent out his best wishes to all on the occasion of this year’s May Day.
In a tweet posted on Monday, Nasheed also said that a minimum wage and a Pay Commission must be introduced to ensure a fair pay structure.
We must introduce minimum wage and a Pay Commission to ensure a fair pay structure for employees. My best wishes to all on #MayDay2017.

A Pay Commission was introduced by the Government, but is yet to create a minimum wage or a pay structure. The Commission functions as part of Finance Ministry.
May Day was first formally marked under the Nasheed administration, with the day declared as a national holiday.
Following the events of February 7, 2012, successive Governments had cracked down the various May Day events. Those arrested in the protests were given harsh sentences. Figures such as Adhaalath Party Leader Sheikh Imran Abdullah had been jailed for 12 years on terrorism.
