Faris charged on corruption
Charges are political
Bribery charges under investigation as well

Yumna Maumoon, former First Daughter during the Maumoon Abdul Gayoom administration and sibling to Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon, slams the charges against him as “political”.

Prosecutor General’s Office had decreed that the corruption charges levied against MP Faris over the audit reports of 2007 and 2008 cannot be investigated as the statute of limitations on such cases had expired. Clause 61 of the Penal Code states that the statute of limitations on such cases is eight years, with three years for misdemeanors. Therefore, the case cannot be sent for prosecution as the statute of limitations had expired.

Speaking to Raajje.mv, Yumna Maumoon said that there were two charges on MP Faris. The first one, she said was the audit reports of the Presidential residence of Theemuge for the years 2007 and 2008. The second one was the bribery charges.

“I do believe the decision on the issue on press today (2008 audit report case) is a political one. It was done as the Local Council Elections are coming up. It’s just drama for the public. The other charge is still there,” she said.

The duo had been quite active of late, taking a key role in the opposition movement against half-uncle and incumbent President Abdullah Yameen. MP Faris came under investigation by the authorities following the vote of no confidence on Parliament Speaker Abdullah Maseeh.
