Faris came under investigation following the Speaker vote

Prosecutor General’s Office has passed not to press formal charges on Dhiggaru Constituency MP and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s son Ahmed Faris Maumoon.

The Parliamentarian came under investigation over the audit reports of Presidential Residence Theemuge for the years 2007 and 2008. The investigation began following the vote of no confidence on Parliament Speaker Abdullah Maseeh.

Prosecutor General passed the decision not to press formal charges on Thursday and the case has been sent back to the Police.

Clause 61 of the Penal Code states that the Statute of limitations on criminal cases is an eight year period, with three years for misdemeanors. Therefore, under the Penal Code, he cannot be tried for this case.

Faris had also been investigated for attempting to bribe and sway voters. He had been summoned to Police over the matter but it is unclear whether the case had been sent for prosecution.
