Maldives Police Service (MPS) says that the final preparations for the upcoming Local Council Elections were completed.

Central Operations Command’s head Chief Superintendent of Police Hamdhoon Rasheed said that the security teams for the elections had headed off to the islands on Sunday morning. All teams have been given the required training as well.

Hamdhoon said a significant number of candidates were contesting in the Elections and therefore, security had been made a priority in the elections.

“We’re not just looking at security in this elections. We’re looking into other aspects as well,” Hamdhoo said.

He said the ballot papers are under their security mandate as well. Hamdhoon added that Police will be providing security for the foreign observers as well.

Hamdhoon noted that security will be tightened from the 5th of May.

Police had appealed to general public to lend assistance when required and to ensure that the elections were conducted peacefully.

The voting for Local Council Elections will be held on 6th May.
