Yameen Rasheed murder
Tholal questions Govt. sincerity over Yameen’s murder investigation
Govt. officials yet to meet Yameen’s family
No Govt. officials participated in any events held in his memory
Govt. statement said his murder was an attack on free media

Former Vice President of Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has questioned the Government’s sincerity over the murder and investigation of the slain writer and human rights activist Yameen Rasheed.

Yameen was murdered a week ago.

In a tweet posted on Saturday, Tholal questioned over why no government official had visited the slain activist’s family and attended any of the multiple events held in his memory. He labeled this as “shameful”.

The only message issued by the Government was on the day of the murder, where it was defined as a loss to Maldivian social media sphere and an attack on free media and democracy.

Yameen had been filing the death threats he had received to the Police from 2014 onward, to no avail.

Police had released photos of two suspects involved in the murder, but no additional progress had been announced to the public. Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said that the investigation was proceeding, but refrained on issuing a comment on any arrests.

He said any progress will be shared with media.
