President Abdulla Yameen has said that his administration aims to achieve nothing short than victory.
At a rally conducted primarily by ruling party candidates contesting the upcoming local council elections on Friday, President Yameen said that the Maldivian people need to be reminded about the conditions under previous governments.
As such he said they must recall the ‘situation during 2009 to 2012’ and the ‘desolation’ leading up to former President Mohamed Nasheed’s resignation.
“The people need to recall the desolation and despair from 2009 to February of 2012, it was a time of financial loss and deterioration of private property. It was a time when places were being lit on fire. We need to think about those things” he said.
Yameen further remarked, while the various members of the international community have expressed concern about government tactics following the arrests of opposition leaders, that Nasheed’s administration was marked by unlawfully arrests and detention.
He counted himself, and other politicians – who are now aligned with the opposition – such as former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and former Vice President Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.
The Local Council Elections will be held next Saturday, 6th May.
