High Court upholds drug-related sentence against Indian boat captain
A woman was sentenced to life imprisonment and a MVR 100,000 fine after drugs were discovered onboard a vessel she captained

The Criminal Court ruling to jail an Indian boat captain whose ship was found holding large quantities of heroin and cannabis has been upheld by the High Court.

Maria Sosai Ponathambi was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined by MVR 100,000 after the drugs were discovered onboard a vessel she captained, cargo ship MVS Maria Janeamaal , on February 23rd 2013.

The Criminal Court said in its verdict that the police had found 1.9 grams of heroin in boxes onboard, along with 81.9 grams of cannabis in rubber wrapping.

She said in court that she was tasked with simply delivering the boxes from an ‘agent in India’ to an individual in the Maldives.

The High Court’s adjudicators deemed the verdict adequate and expressed that the was no reason to alter it.
