Two expatriates have passed away after a boat capsized.

Police spokesperson Adnan Mohamed said that the two were Indian nationals. The 11 other individuals on board were treated in IGMH. He said one Maldivian and an expatriate needed emergency attention for ingesting salt water. All 11 individuals and the two deceased were taken to IGMH around 0815hrs on Thursday.

The vessel was named Princess and is used as a supply boat for a new resort under development.

Owner Ibrahim Shafeeq confirmed to Raajje.mv that the boat’s captain, two employees and expatriate employees of Elia Construction were on board.

He added that the two deceased were employed by Elia Construction, who had died while trying to swim to a nearby island when the boat capsized. Shafeeq noted that the two could not swim and that the captain had sustained several injuries, but was recovering.

Shafeeq said the boat had departed around 1900hrs on Wednesday. The boat had stopped near Himmiyaa reef and had attempted to leave after sunrise towards Raa Atoll, when the accident occurred.

The individuals were rescued by MNDF.
