The Criminal Court has ruled that Malé City Council member Zaidhul Ameen will be kept in detention until the investigation into the charges against him is concluded.
The prosecution had asked that Ameen, who has been remanded given a 15 day remand and tranferred to house arrest, be kept in detention at the closed-door hearing on Tuesday.
The next hearing is to be held at 8:45 pm on May 2nd.
Ameen’s lawyer has said that the prosecution does not possess credible evidence against his client, whose arrest and detention is both unlawful.
Although he was arrested on January 13th on allegations of attempting to blackmail a judge, prosecution is now trying Ameen for obstruction.
Ameen is a member of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives’ faction loyal to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
