A number of journalists and well-wishers gathered at Artificial Beach, calling for justice in the barbaric murder of writer Yameen Rasheed.
The 29-year-old was stabbed to death late Saturday night, and was found on the staircase of his residence at around 3:00 am. He died while receiving treatment at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital reportedly.
Around 100 people gathered at the Artificial Beach on Monday evening, where they unleashed ‘red balloons’ in memory of the late writer, as well as calling for justice for him.
Yameen’s father, Hussain Rasheed took part in the event, as well as missing journalists Ahmed Rilwan’s mother and family.
Yameen and Rilwan were close friends and Yameen had sought justice for his friend till his last breath.
Police are yet to make any arrests in the investigation, and have called for the public to avoid doing anything that could hinder the investigation.
The government called the attack on Yameen “an attack on democracy and media freedom”, while Amnesty noted that Yameen’s killing shows the "police’s failure to protect his life", despite him reporting the multiple death threats he had received.
