Yameen Rasheed's Murder
Concerned Maldivians are being deprived of the basic right to life: HRCM
Yameen was found on the staircase of his home at around 3 am on Saturday with multiple stab wounds
He had previously received death threats, which he had reported to the authorities to no avail
International community has been expressing concern over the cruel murder

Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has condemned the ‘inhuman murder’ of blogger Yameen Rasheed.

In a statement issued on Sunday, HRCM said that it condemned the ‘inhuman and cruel’ murder of Yameen ‘in the strongest terms’.

Noting that the right to life is a basic right, HRCM said that it is ‘saddened and concerned’ that a number of Maldivians are being deprived of this right.

Yameen Rasheed was attacked late Saturday night, and he was discovered at around 3 am with multiple wounds to his chest, neck and throat. He died while receiving treatment at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

HRCM statement noted issues such as death threats and other such threats ‘causes chaos in the society’.

“Hence, we call on relevant institutions to ensure that such incidents do not repeat, and work to create a safe environment,” said HRCM.

It also called on all relevant institutions to ‘do everything necessary’ to bring the culprits to justice, and ‘to further strengthen their work so that such incidents do not repeat’.

Sending condolences to Yameen’s family, HRCM called on everyone to refrain from doing anything that could hinder the investigation into his death, and to cooperate with authorities.

President Abdulla Yameen has called on all institutions to dispose all their resources into the investigations, while the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has called for an independent investigation, ‘with the involvement of credible international bodies’.
