Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has condemned the detention of his opposition partner Qasim Ibrahim.
In a tweet on Friday, following the Criminal Court decision to remand Qasim by 15 days, Gayoom said – in regards to the allegations – Qasim has acted within his mandate as a parliamentarian.
The post further said that someone who has not been violation of any laws or conducts himself in adherence to the constitution cannot be lawfully prosecuted.
Officers are reportedly investigating Qasim for a speech he gave at Kunooz, the Jumhooree Party’s primary assembly site, on April 5th.
He was arrested on Thursday night, and immediately escorted to detention in Dhoonidhoo island.
