The voter’s list for the upcoming local council elections have all the information required under the electoral guidelines, the Elections Commission has said.
The commission said this in response to opposition Maldivian Democratic and Jumhooree Parties’ refusal to sign the list claiming that it is in violation of said guidelines.
The parties have sent a letter to the elections commissioner detailing their account of the discrepancies in the voter’s lists.
The Supreme Court’s guidelines pertaining to elections, issued in 2013, dictate that all voter’s lists must carry the signatures of all parties contesting the elections.
The Jumhooree Party said that the Elections Commission has three different versions of the list and therefore refused to sign it.
The local council elections are scheduled for May 6th.
