Former Home Minister Hassan Afeef says that the current Constitution provided sufficient protection for public rights and if any laws contravene the Constitution it must not be followed.
Speaking in the MDP rally held in Thimarafushi island, Afeef said that all must reflect on the current status of the nation. Adding that some parts of the Constitution have been changed to include aspects that contravene the essence of the Constitution, he said this must not be followed.
He said that present Government was changing the Constitution at will for their personal gain and to eliminate opposition. As such, Afeef marked that public must speak out against this, as it creates complications to create a rule that is truly for the public.
Afeef also highlighted on the role of responsibility noting that blind obedience does not equate to being responsible. He said that all rights have been revoked, including freedom of press, assembly and other similar rights. This, he said was in direct contrast to the essence of the Constitution.
Stating that the current Government’s reign will come to an end, Afeef said that those who had changed the Constitution must be held accountable to those changes.
He said with the majority this Government enjoyed they had only carried out vice, including the biggest corruption scandal in the whole of the nation.
Afeef urged that there will be no gain by voting for the Government and called on all to vote for the opposition to bring in meaningful reform.
