Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has strongly criticized the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) over the arrest and continued detention of Male’ City Council Member Zaidhul Ameen for over three months, without any formal charges.
In a tweet posted Thursday, the former President said that HRCM had failed to even condemn Zaidhul Ameen’s arrests, in spite of the fact that he has been under arrest for around three months.
If @hrcmv cannot look into why an innocent man is detained in prison for over 3 months what human rights are they protecting? @Shiyama_M

Calling Zaidhul innocent of the crime he was accused of, President Maumoon questioned exactly what human rights was the Commission protecting.
Zaidhul Ameen was arrested on January 12th. His remand has been extended eight times since then.
He was accused of conspiring to blackmail senior Government officials.
