Former President Mohamed Nasheed has traveled to Sri Lanka on Thursday.

While the former President arrived in Lanka on Thursday morning, RaajjeMV is uncertain on the purpose of his visit.

Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in jail on March 13, 2015 and was given permission to travel to the United Kingdom for medical purposes in January 2016.  He has since been granted political asylum in the UK.

This is Nasheed’s third visit to Sri Lanka this year. His first visit was in January, where he held meetings with senior officials of his party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), as well as Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena, Vice President Ranil Wickremesinghe and other foreign diplomats.

The second visit was in March, days before the no-confidence vote against parliament speaker on March 27. He met with senior Sri Lankan government officials during the visit as well.

Nasheed’s first visit to Colombo since his self-banishment was in August 2016.
