The conditions that social media activist Thayyib Shaheem is being detained in meet international standards on the treatment of prisoners, the police have said.
“The case is being investigated, and if there is enough evidence, he will be tried – everything is being done within legal ambit” an official from the Maldives Police Service (MPS) said.
Shaheem’s lawyers had previously said he was being kept in in squalid conditions; mosquito-ridden with no clean water.
The ‘prisoner of conscience’ was arrested on March 18, on allegations of spreading 'false information' through his accounts on various social media platforms.
RaajjeMV had then received credible information that he was arrested regarding a audio clips he allegedly leaked online.
Amnesty International had on Wednesday called on its ‘Urgent Action Network’ to pressure authorities towards his release.
