Some officers act illegally, Police have to be an example to all: Pres. Yameen
Law empowers Police officers
Senior officials have to uphold public perception
Officers are also citizens

President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that even the Police are prone to illegal actions,

Speaking in the ceremony held in Dharubaaruge to mark the 84th anniversary of Maldives Police Service, President Yameen said the career of a Police officer was not an easy path, adding that it was more difficult to stay as a Police officer. He urged not to let public perception cloud the individual officer’s work, adding that it was the procedures and laws that defined the work of an officer.

President Yameen said the law was both a crutch and empowerment for officers. However, he said there were officers who acted illegally as well.

“There are some officers who stray. Even though there are rare cases, there are some officers who act illegally,” President Yameen said.

President Yameen urged senior officials of Police to maintain the public image of Police officers, but noted that this has to be done legally. The President added that we have to understand officers are also citizens.

He concluded by stating that with an 84-year history, we must salute the officers for their service.
