"Concerned about irregularities" in speaker vote: US Embassy
Called to ensure free and impartial proceedings in Parliament
Called to ensure basic freedoms of press, assembly, speech

Embassy of the United States of America, accredited to both the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Republic of Maldives had released a statement on Monday's parliament proceedings.

The statement reads as follows:

"We are concerned about irregularities that impeded a free and fair vote in the Maldives Parliament on March 27. We call on the Government to restore faith in democratic processes by ensuring free and impartial proceedings in Parliament, free and fair local elections, and basic freedoms of press, assembly, and speech,"

The statement came amid objections raised by opposition over the voting method used in the motion against the parliament speaker Abdullah Maseeh. The vote was observed only by the MPs from the PPM-MDA coalition.

The tweet was deleted a few minutes after it was posted.
