Criminal Court, on Thursday, extended the remand of social media activist Thayyib Shaheem, who was arrested on the allegation of inciting fear and panic regarding the flu outbreak and spreading false information.
Thayyib’s remand was extended by 15 days. He was arrested on Thursday night, and issued an eight day remand the next day.
Thayyib’s lawyer, Mahefooz Saeed told RaajjeMV that his client has been accused of inciting fear and panic regarding the flu outbreak and spreading false information.
Saeed said that despite the accusation, police have been unable to show any proof, and that they have been unable to explain what he had said “to incite fear and panic”.
It is important to note that even after his arrest, Thayyib’s twitter account has been active.
Thayyib, a former journalist, is an opposition activist, and strong vocal critic of the current government.
In a report released on Tuesday, Amnesty International it "believes that Thayyib Shaheem has been detained solely for exercising his right to freedom of expression, and therefore considers him a prisoner of conscience."
