The government of India has handed over the 28 water and sewerage facilities established under the Exim Bank’s Line of Credit Facility, to the Maldivian government.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu attended the ceremony for the official handover of the facilities on Saturday afternoon.
The ceremony was held as part of Minister of Indian External Affairs of India Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar’s ongoing official visit to the Maldives.
The Indian EAM officially handed over the successfully completed facilities to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Moosa Zameer.
These projects include the water supply facilities on 22 islands, sewerage facilities on two islands as well as combined water supply and sewerage facilities on four islands.
According to the President’s Office, the main components of the water supply projects include installing Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants, water storage tanks, water distribution pipelines, and water meter connections alongside constructing administrative offices and implementing brine outfall systems.
Further, solar panels were installed on the administrative office roof to partially supply the power needed for RO plant operations through renewable energy.
The sewerage system includes the installation of sewerage network pipelines, house connections, the construction of sewage pumping stations, and the implementation of a sea outfall system.
The project was carried out in a bid to provide clean water and safe sanitary facilities to the people of Maldives.
These essential services have reached a total of 28,298 beneficiaries with the inauguration of the 28 facilities, which covers seven percent of the total population of the island nation. The initiative targets a total of 32,773 beneficiaries.
The facilities inaugurated on Saturday include water supply facilities in Kelaa island of Haa Alif atoll, Funadhoo island of Shaviyani atoll, Manadhoo island of Noonu atoll, Kaashidhoo island of Kaafu atoll, Kurendhoo island of Lhaviyani atoll, Felidhoo island of Vaavu atoll, Meedhoo island of Dhaalu atoll, Bilehdhoo island of Faafu atoll, Maabaidhoo island of Laamu atoll, Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo of Laamu atoll, Maamendhoo island of Laamu atoll, Gan island of Laamu atoll, Kolhufushi island of Meemu atoll, Muli island of Meemu atoll, Maduvvari island of Meemu atoll, Hirilandhoo island of Thaa atoll, Maamendhoo island of Gaaf Alif atoll, Dhaandhoo island of Gaaf Alif atoll, Gemanafushi island of Gaaf Alif atoll, Faresmaathodaa island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll, Hoadhehdhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll and Madaveli island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll.
Sewerage facilities were inaugurated in Thoddoo island of Alif Alif atoll and Dhangethi island of Alif Dhaal atoll.
Both water supply and sewerage facilities were inaugurated in Fulidhoo island and Thinadhoo island of Vaavu atoll, Bandidhoo island of Dhaal atoll and Dharanboodhoo island of Faafu atoll.
