Seven islands have been designated to be developed as urban centers.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to establish urban centers on seven islands in the Maldives.
This was announced by the government in a press release issued by the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development on Saturday.
The islands designated by the government to be developed as urban centers include Ungoofaaru island of Raa atoll, Eydhafushi island of Baa atoll, Naifaru island of Lhaviyani atoll, Mahibadhoo island of Alif Dhaal atoll, Nilandhoo island of Faafu atoll, Kudahuvadhoo island of Dhaalu atoll and Fonadhoo island of Laamu atoll.
The statement also highlighted that establishing urban centers in the Maldives is a pledge made by President Muizzu.
The islands selected by the government for development as urban centers do not include the largest islands in terms of land area or population.
