A group of three have been arrested and remanded in a case of kidnapping and for severing the finger of the victim.

Arrested in connection with the case was a 23-year-old, a 21-year-old and an 18-year-old.

All three suspects are Maldivian men.

The three youths are accused of assault using sharp weapons, beating up a person and holding him hostage in the capital, Malé City.

The Criminal Court has remanded all three suspects until the end of their trial.

The court order revealed that sufficient evidence has been produced to prove the charges against them.

As such, investigation statements, snapshots of CCTV footage, photographs of the victim’s injuries, intelligence reports and other evidence were submitted.

Stressing that based on the photographs of the victims, it appears that the victim was subject to prolonged torture, the court order revealed that sufficient evidence has been filed to prove that the “organized” crime was committed over the course of a long period, by a group of individuals.

However, one of the accused in the case denied the allegations, claiming that he did not sever the victim’s finger and that the injury was caused while using a power tool.

The court has instructed authorities to wrap up the investigation in connection with the case, as soon as possible and send for prosecution to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office).

Judge Mohamed Misbah issued the Criminal Court order.
