The government has renamed a few institutions under the purview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a statement on Tuesday, the President’s Office revealed that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has renamed some institutions under the purview of the foreign ministry and designated official English names to these institutions.
Two directives were issued on Tuesday, publicly announcing the changes.
The decision was made by the president under the powers vested to him as per Section 116 (a) of the Constitution of Maldives.
The changes have been in effect from 25 June 2024.
The official names of the institutions include:
- Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations
- High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
- High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
- High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in the Republic of India
- Consulate of the Republic of Maldives in Thiruvananthapuram
- High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in Malaysia
- Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva
- Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in Japan
- High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in the Republic of Singapore
- Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
- Consulate of the Republic of Maldives in Jeddah
- Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the People's Republic of China
- Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the Kingdom of Belgium and Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the European Union
- High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in the People's Republic of Bangladesh
- High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan
- Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the United States of America
- Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the United Arab Emirates
- Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the Federal Republic of Germany
- Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the Kingdom of Thailand
- Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the Republic of Türkiye
Out of these, the newly renamed institutions are the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva, the Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the Kingdom of Belgium and Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the European Union.
Further, Muizzu has designated the official English names to be used for the institutions.
