Former President Mohamed Nasheed injured in explosion

Former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has departed to Germany on the morning of Eid.

Former president Nasheed was discharged from ADK Hospital on Thursday, one week after an assassination attempt against his person in Male' City. The explosion had left Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed in need of multiple surgeries, and it is believed he will be seeking further medical care from aboard.

Maldives' first democratically elected president Mohamed Nasheed was seen leaving the Maldives' capital via bridge to Velana International Airport earlier on Thursday, with a full security motorcade detail.

It is unclear when President Nasheed will return to Maldives, but the team at Raajje MV wishes him a swift and full recovery on the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr.

Former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed will be departing to Germany on Thursday morning, his family have confirmed.

Former president Nasheed is reportedly doing well after having sustained multiple injuries following an assassination attempt on his person earlier this week.

Nasheed underwent extensive surgeries that lasted 16 hours following the explosion that targeted him outside of his home on 6 May 2021. He had 10 pieces of razor wedged inside his body and shrapnel removed. Doctors said that the extent of his trauma was not in the norm, and it is believed Speaker Nasheed will be receiving further medical care to speed up his recovery while abroad.

The Maldives Police Service on Tuesday stated that they had arrested all the suspects required to proceed with investigations in the attack on former president Mohamed Nasheed.

However, Police revealed that they had identified other persons of interest, and that investigations in the case was still ongoing. Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz stated that they would be sharing information with the media and public as the investigations progressed, and that authorities were working to find out how Adhuham had learned of Speaker Nasheed's schedule on the night of the explosion.

Maldives Police Service have revealed they are yet to find a link between the attack on former president Mohamed Nasheed, and any other cases that were investigated by them in the past.

In a press conference held on Tuesday, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that Neeloofaaru street in Male' City was no longer closed off for investigation. Police added that while civilians could now enter and leave the area, it was very important that the public share any information they encounter about the attack with authorities. MPS revealed that the surrounding buildings had now been cleared of debris and any other remnants of the blast.

The Maldives National Defense Force and the Maldives Police Service have confirmed that the search and seizure operation at Bihuroazu Mosque on Monday night had been a false alarm. Officers had received reports of a suspicious object, but no immediate threats or dangers had been identified at the location.

Parts of Rahdhebai Magu of Male' City were closed off as MNDF kicked of their operation at 12am. Armed officers were seen searching some parts of the neighborhood, with no civilians permitted to enter or exit the perimeter.

In detailing the operation, MNDF revealed that the operation was being conducted following reports of a suspicious object inside the mosque, and that they had not found such an object after clearing the site.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has guaranteed that those responsible for the terrorist attack which targeted former president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed will be brought to face justice.

The President made the assertion at the 173rd National Council Meeting of main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Sunday night. President Solih stated that he had spoken with former president Nasheed on Sunday afternoon, and that he had been assured of Speaker Nasheed's will and determination through their meeting.

President Solih went on to firmly assert that those that had targeted former president Mohamed Nasheed would be brought to face justice.

In addition to this, President Solih stated that the Prosecutor General's Office had been giving their full support for the investigation, and that a special team had been created to battle the case at court. President Solih confirmed that PG Hussain Shameem would be representing the state against Speaker Nasheed's attackers in court. President Solih added that foreign experts with the UNODC and the United Kingdom were already assisting Maldives' investigation into the attack on Speaker Nasheed.

Further, President Solih declared that acts of terror were deliberately designed to disrupt the nation's peace, and stated that MDP and his government would stand firmly against any such malicious actors. He added that MDP had always sought justice, and that the party would work towards establishing peace across the country, while respecting the right to life of all people.

Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has revealed that he will be representing the state in court against those that attempted to assassinate former president Mohamed Nasheed.

PG Shameem confirmed this on Sunday evening, stating that he felt he should do so as the case is extremely sensitive.

While PG Shameem has been seen in court for a few cases in the past, the common practice is that lawyers from the Prosecutor General's Office represent the state in court. In 2008, PG Shameem had secured a conviction in court against a man that had attempted to stab former president Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, with the attacker having received a 13-year prison sentence.

Three people have been charged with terrorism following an attempt to assassinate former president and Speaker of Parliament on Thursday. All three were remanded for 15 days, and have denied the charges raised against them. However, PG Shameem had earlier stated that he believed there was enough evidence against them to secure a conviction.

All three suspects arrested in relation to the attempt made on former president Mohamed Nasheed's life have denied charges of terrorism raised against them at court.

Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed, Hiyaa, from Thinadhoo island of Vaavu atoll, Mujaz Ahmed, MA. Feyruge, K. Male' and Thahumeen Ahmed Folheymaa, GA. Kondey, plead not guilty to charges of terrorism.

Thahumeen Ahmed had also denied being the owner of the motorbike to which the explosive to target Speaker Nasheed had been attached. However, records submitted to court by the Maldives Police Service state Thahumeen Ahmed as the registered owner of the motorbike.

Judge Adam Mohamed had concluded that there was enough evidence to convict the three suspects in this case, as all three of them had prior criminal records. The three suspects have been remanded by 15 days as the investigation into the assassination attempt against former president Mohamed Nasheed is currently ongoing.

During the press conference, Police revealed that all three suspects had a background that could be linked to religious extremism. However, authorities could not confirm if they were linked to international terror organizations, and assured that investigations were ongoing to quickly uncover the motive behind the attack.

Though Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz declined to detail their criminal records in response to a question, he revealed that they had committed small crimes in the past, including illicit substance abuse and theft.

CP Hameed stated that authorities would not stop by arresting the bombers that had attempted to assassinate former president Nasheed. He stated that the Maldives Police Service would be pursuing those that had orchestrated the terror-attack, including those that Adhuham had been caught contacting on CCTV on the night of the explosion. Adhuham and Mujaz had been tracked walking through a swathe of Male' City and contacting others on the night of the explosion.

Police revealed that the group of suspects had purchased SIM cards and mobile phones specifically ahead of the assassination attempt on Speaker Nasheed.

Police revealed that they had found tools Adhuham had used to attempt and disguise himself at his home.

All the materials used to execute an assassination attempt against former president Mohamed Nasheed would have been fairly easy to find in the Maldives, Police reveal, including batteries used in the remote and sharp razor pieces used as shrapnel to increase the explosion's damage.

Adhuham had been spotted by cameras waiting near Athama Palace on Majeedhee Magu, just a few paces away from where an explosion had targeted former president Mohamed Nasheed. Police had been able to lift his foot-print from a wall, and he had been tracked by CCTV cameras through Male' City alongside 21-year-old Mujaz Ahmed, who had been arrested as a suspect in this case on Saturday.

In a press conference held on Sunday, the Maldives Police Service have revealed that the third man suspected in the assassination attempt on former president Mohamed Nasheed has now been arrested.

Police revealed that the man had been arrested after a tip-off from the public had led officers to him in Hulhumale' ward of the capital city.

He is believed to be the primary suspect in the attempt made on former president Nasheed's life. The third suspect has been named as Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed, Hiyaa, from Thinadhoo island of Vaavu atoll.

Former President Nasheed's family has confirmed to RaajjeMV that authorities are currently working to transport him abroad for further treatment.

Discussions on the matter will be held once his checkup is conducted.

Maldives Police Service has confirmed a third arrest in connection to the terrorist attack of former president Mohamed Nasheed.

Photos circulating on social media show a group of police officers taking a man into police custody near Ghaazee School of Hulhumale' early Sunday morning.

Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem stated that he believed there had been enough evidence collected to prosecute and secure convictions in court against two suspects arrested in this case.

ACP Riyaz also revealed that they had been arrested under a court order, and that the residences of the two men had also been searched in an operation conducted by police on Saturday.

Police revealed that the two men arrested today had been included in a pool of four suspects in total.

Police have released pictures of a man believed to be a third suspect, and have asked support from the public in identifying and arresting him.

CP Hameed has also confirmed a fourth person of interest in the attempt on President Nasheed's life, whose identity and picture have not yet been confirmed publicly as the investigation is currently ongoing.

CP Hameed stated that over the years, intelligence and investigation supported the argument that there were those within Maldivian communities who could be perceived as a threat to the public due to their support of extremism and violent ideologies.

CP Hameed said that the two men who had been arrested also fell into this category.

Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has described known links between violent, extremist ideologies and those arrested for attacking former president Mohamed Nasheed. PG Shameem stated that they could not reveal some of the information publicly as the investigation was still ongoing in this case.

The two men who were arrested were also revealed to have prior criminal records at the press.
