Maldives Police Service (MPS) questioned Yumna Maumoon regarding missing documents from the former head office of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), on Wednesday morning.

The daughter of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and half-niece of incumbent President Abdulla Yameen, was served a chit on Tuesday, summoning her to the police headquarters at 11 am on Wednesday.

Speaking afterwards, Yumna said that even though she was summoned regarding a case of missing documents from the PPM head office, that the police had not taken her statement.

Noting that she had answered all their questions, Yumna said that she also provided them details of the actvities they had attempted to carry out in late October, to mark the party's fifth anniversary. She added that no one from Maumoon’s faction of the party had entered the party office, since the police took it over from them.

The former PPM head office has been changed to the office of the party leader.

Yumna is a council member of Maumoon's faction of PPM, which is under investigation by MPS, regarding missing documents from the PPM headquarters.

The party has been divided since June 2016, as Maumoon and Yameen continue to be involved in a very public battle over party leadership.

PPM’s Secretary General, Abdul Aleem and member Mohamed Waheed- MP for Thulusdhoo constituency who is on party leader, Maumoon’s faction- were previously summoned for questioning as well.

Yameen’s faction of the party had filed a case at the police, claiming that Maumoon’s faction had stolen important documents, including party registry, despite Civil Court ruling that the party be handed over to President Yameen.

Following the fight, Yumna resigned from her post in the government, assuring that she will remain with her father, in his work to reform the party.

In addition to Yumna, her twin-sister, Dunya Maumoon had also resigned from her post as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, days after the fight started.

While Dunya denied that the bitterness between the half-brothers had anything to do with her decision- saying that she resigned because of “irreconcilable differences” on the government’s policy in implementing the death penalty in the Maldives- Dunya was seen, along with her siblings, in the frontlines with her father in the months following.

On January 5, the government announced that Dunya has been appointed as a state minister at the Ministry of Health.
