A youth has been arrested and remanded for allegedly vandalizing Furqan Mosque.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) on Tuesday revealed that Naushad Moosa, 30, was arrested under a court order on Monday.

MPS added that upon being presented to the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on Tuesday, the suspect was remanded for a 15-day period.

The damage to Furqan Mosque was reported in the early hours of Sunday.

A video showing the damage to the mosque located on Ameenee Magu in the congested capital, Malé City, has gone viral on social media.

The video shows copies of the Holy Quran inside the mosque strewn about, with significant damage also inflicted on the mosque's electrical boards and ablution area. Taking to the social media platform ‘Facebook’ in connection with the case, Sheikh Adam Nishan stated that the damage was caused by a mentally ill young man who regularly sleeps in the mosque, even during prayer times. He added that the individual has scattered copies of the Holy Quran and engaged in other disruptive actions in the past as well.
