A mobile phone shop was broken into and robbed in the capital Malé on Wednesday night.

My Tec, located in the Maafaanu ward of the city, sells mobile phones and accessories, as well as a number of other tech-related items.

The robbers broke into the shop by breaking the glass door, and damaging the door. They had broken the CCTV cameras inside the shop as well.

The owner of My Tec told RaajjeMV that MVR 6,000 was stolen from the counter, with a number of phones missing from the shop as well.

According to the owner, the value of the items and damage caused to the shop is believed to exceed MVR 100,000.

A number of CCTV cameras were seen in the area where the shop is located, and while some individuals from nearby buildings had witnesses the robbery, they refused to reveal anything for their own safety.

Police's forensic department has launched an investigation into the robbery.

Crimes such as burglary and mugging have increased in Malé City, which is just 1.7km long and 1km wide. Police says that all such cases 'are under investigation'.
