Gan Constituency MP Fayyaz Ismail says foreign investors into the housing sector in the Maldives pulled out as they were being forced to pay exorbitant sums to senior Government officials as cuts and bribes.
Speaking in RaajjeTV’s Fala Surukhee program, MP Fayyaz said the present administration was talking of housing for 200,000 citizens merely to hoodwink citizens. He said it was highly unlikely this will be carried out in the next year, given that it had remained unrealized in the past four years.
MP Fayyaz added the two or three thousand flats opened in the past four years were ones that were started back during the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) administration.
Speaking in the ceremony held on Saturday evening to launch the Hiyaa housing scheme, President Abdullah Yameen had blamed opposition for the failures in addressing housing issues in the nation.
MP Fayyaz responded back to this, stating that President Yameen was the one who had created chaos and in the process decimated the economy. This, coupled with failures in the judicial justice system, had caused loss of investor confidence, said the Parliamentarian.
