President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that political differences within the nation should not pave way for a divide.
He made the statement in the official ceremony held to mark the 49th Republic Day, at a time when most of his rivals are either under trial or in jail on various charges.
The President highlighted on the various challenges that face the nation while we all embark on national development. As such, he stressed unity, in spite of differences, was key in achieving this goal.
‘Such ideological antagonism is what will disrupt the prosperity and the togetherness of the society by creating negative ideals, and will transmit over generations to come. Hence, we must take it as a national obligation to take measures to end the spread of such damaging ideologies,’ he said.
President Yameen further noted the various attacks sustained by state institutions, which, he said were not always visible at all times. He stressed on the need for more resilience in the nation and institutions of the nation.
This year National Award of Honour was conferred on two individuals, while 25 recieved National Award of Recognition.
The National Award is presented to outstanding individuals, civil institutions, private companies, and organisations in recognition of, and honouring, exceptional and continuous services towards nurturing a healthier and more vibrant society and contribution to national development.
