Opposition in Raa Atoll for the weekend

Maduvvari Constituency MP Mohamed Ameeth says that the incumbent administration wished to crush all dissent.

Speaking in the rally held in Meedhoo island in Raa Atoll on Friday evening, MP Ameeth said the scenes from Meedhoo island had proved that citizens will always rally against oppression and corruption.

MP Ameeth, who had been stripped from his Parliament seat unconstitutionally, said he made a pledge to citizens for development and to raise their voices in Parliament. When he raised his concerns over illegal gains from public funds, MP Ameeth said the Government sought to silence and jail him.

He added if we do not hold the Government accountable, then those in power will continue their actions and in the end, citizens will suffer.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Deputy Leader Mohamed Shifaz said that MP Ameeth had raised his voice for the sake of citizens and his constituents. A disagreement with President Yameen, Shifaz said should not be a reason for an MP to lose his seat.

Adhaalath Party’s Scholar’s Committee member Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Baaree said back in 2008, Maldivians accepted a Constitution that prioritized on justice and fairness. However, he said this Government had violated the sanctity of the Constitution, with the institutions following the same suit.

Dr. Majeed added the purpose of the joint opposition was to bring an administration that will uphold the Constitution.
