ACC rules out foul play in leasing apartment to Pres. Yameen’s son
Apartment leased in 2015
Two-room apartment leased for MVR 12,000
Says the lease follows Finance Ministry rules

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has ruled out foul play in leasing an apartment from a state-owned building to son of President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

The two-bedroom apartment from Muraidhooge was leased to Zain Abdullah Yameen in 2015. Media reports at that time quoted MVR 12,000 as rent for the apartment.

After reviewing the case, ACC ruled the transaction followed the rules laid out by Finance Ministry and therefore there were no elements of corruption in the transactions.

The case was filed in ACC by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) citing that rent was not paid and that overdue rent and penalties were waived off. MDP had requested to clarify on how the apartment was leased to Zain.

MDP alleged that the order issued by Finance Ministry on Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) to waive off the fines was abuse of power on part of the Minister.
