A police officer has been charged with plotting to assassinate President Abdulla Yameen.

RaajjeMV understands that the officer in question holds the rank of sub-inspector. He was apprehended in August.

He is accused of plotting to assassinate the President, and of encouraging such behavior via social media.

While a police officer has been charged with the plotting to kill President Yameen, three military officials- including then Malé Area Commander, Captain Ahmed "Papa" Fayaz- were arrested over a separate assassination attempt on the President back in 2015. The explosion aboard a speedboat carrying the President on the 28th of September 2015 was a clear assassination attempt, according to government officials.

It was later discovered that the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the boat was planted by a military officer, on the orders of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, who was convicted of masterminding the assassination plot in June 2016.

Furthermore, suspects have been arrested in two other alleged assassination attempts on the President: attempting to kill him with the help of a Sri Lankan sniper in October 2015 and planting a bomb near Mulee-aage in November 2015.
