Former President and elected President of ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) Maumoon Abdul Gayoom says that he regrets that the Party had deviated from its objectives.
In a tweet posted to mark six years to founding the Party, President Maumoon had thanked all those who were involved in setting up the Party.

Jailed Dhiggaru Constituency MP and son Ahmed Faris Maumoon was a key figure in forming the Party. in the tweet, the former President attached a photo of MP Faris presenting documentation to form the Party to former head of Elections Commission (EC).
PPM had split into two factions amid a power struggle between Party’s elected President Maumoon and Chief Advisor and incumbent President Abdullah Yameen. Following the power struggle President Maumoon, daughter Yumna Maumoon and MP Faris was booted from the Party.
