The parliament secretariat decision to toss a motion against Broadcasting Commission member Fathimath Zaina is indicative of Secretary General Ahmed Mohamed taking political sides, said opposition lawmaker Imthiyaz Fahmy.
MP Imthiyaz said that members of the parliament committee on independent institution had been not be informed of the decision to not include the motion in its agenda.
Imthiyaz said that upon inquiring as to why the motion was not included, he was told that it was ousted on the grounds that it had an error in phrasing. Reportedly, the name of a legal statute included had been wrong.
Imthiyaz and MP Rozaina Adam filed the motion after Zaina was openly seen at rallies and functions organized by the current administration and ruling party.
The motion claimed that this made her capacity to function as an independent member of the institution questionable.
The motion was filed days after video footage of Zaina organizing table numbers and coordinating with other event managers at a function held by the government near Rasfannu Beach in capital city Malé surfaced.
She is seen distancing herself and trying to break the line of sight upon seeing a camera shooting her.
Zaina had previously worked alongside First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim and is known to have played an active role in the Progressive Party of Maldives’ administration.
