Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) says that the death of Abdul Rasheed, one of the individuals jailed following the May Day protests, occurred due to state institution’s neglect.
In a press conference on Tuesday, Chairperson Hassan Latheef said Abdul Rasheed had passed away while serving an unjust sentence while being denied adequate medical treatment. The Party condemned state’s inaction in providing treatment.
Abdul Rasheed Mohamed was taken to the hospital for an unexpected ailment on Monday.
An official from the Maldives Correctional Services said that doctors pronounced Abdul Rasheed dead at about 10:30 am.
Abdul Rasheed would have finished carrying out his sentence on February 18th, 2018.
