The car set ablaze in Malé City early Monday morning had been used by Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham, her office has confirmed.
An official from the Prosecutor General’s Office said that Prosecutor General Bisham had been in the car hours before the incident.
He further explained that the car was parked in the location where it was set ablaze for the first time as another vehicle had been occupying the parking space provided to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Rescue officers quelled the fire at around 03:15 am on Monday after pedestrians on Janavaree Magu in Henvieru ward reported it.
Officers said that the boot of the car and backseats had been damaged beyond use, with the car’s back-end having sustained most of the damage.
They are unsure if the fire was caused by an act of arson and are currently investigating the matter.
