Residents of Maroshi island in Shaviyani Atoll have had to live benighted due to what they describe as the state’s ‘failure’ to curb power outages.

Abdul Azeez, chair of the island’s local government council, told RaajjeMV that Maroshi is currently being powered by one of two eighty-kilowatt generators, one of which has been faulty since last week.

Azeez said that the island’s residents have had to go without access to electricity for most of Thursday, and that this has disrupted the work of offices there.

He further said that an engineer from a neighbouring island is currently working at Maroshi’s powerhouse in order to fix the faulty generator.

On Friday, the 22nd of September, residents of Maroshi protested after having been provided a used generator by state utilities company Fenaka Corporation.

Fenaka’s Managing Director Ahmed Shareef then said that the generator sent to the island has no faults and that it is only a temporary solution, until the source of the outages is dealt with.
