Bileygfahi Island Council President Abdullah Ziyad says the entire island has ground to standstill due to the fire in the island’s powerhouse.
The fire broke out just after midnight and the powerhouse was completely decimated. No injuries were reported.
Ziyad added the fire had started in the turbo of the 112 kilowatt generator.
He further said due to this, the entire island is without power. The island’s school and health centre were closed off as well.
he reported that most of the food items that need to be temperature controlled were getting spoiled.
Police have already launched an investigation into the case, with a team from state owned Fenaka Corporation to visit today. Ziyad said a temporary generator will be transferred to the island, which will provide electricity from today onward.
He added the entire powerhouse was fully decimated due to the fire, including the panel board.
