The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has held a special event in Hulhumalé on Saturday evening as part of its preparations for a major political gathering scheduled to take place in the capital, Malé City in October.
The event, referred to as the "Pickup Jalsa," was conducted across several locations in Hulhumalé and saw active participation from MDP supporters and activists. During the event, participants voiced strong criticism of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, accusing the government of infringing on fundamental rights and contributing to a decline in the quality of daily life.
Among the concerns raised were issues related to the healthcare system, the rising USD exchange rate, and the increasing cost of living. Attendees also expressed alarm over recent amendments to the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and other laws, which they allege undermine civil liberties and violate the core rights of Maldivian citizens.
A song specifically composed for the upcoming rally, was played along the main roads of Hulhumalé during the event, as organizers called on the public to turn out in large numbers for the gathering, which is scheduled for October 3, in Malé City.
The event marks a key moment in MDP’s campaign to mobilize public opposition against the current administration and comes amid growing political tensions in the country.
