U.S says events in Parliament "disturbing", says it remains with the people
Ambassador Keshap made the statement via video message, shared on twitter
He said that "a free and fair parliament governed by impartial rules is essential to the proper functioning of any healthy democracy"
The Ambassador called on Maldives "to ensure that the Majlis function freely and in accordance with Maldivian law and parliamentary procedures"

U.S. Ambassador to the Maldives stated, via video message, called on the Government "to ensure that the Majlis function freely and in accordance with Maldivian law and parliamentary procedures".

He highlighted that "a free and fair parliament governed by impartial rules is essential to the proper functioning of any healthy democracy," emphasizing that the U.S. will continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Maldives.

"We applaud your faith in democracy. We support your vision of a peaceful, prosperous, stable, moderate, democratic future for the Maldives," added Keshap.

The Ambassador has always kept close relations with both the ruling coalition and the opposition, as well as journalists and members of the civil society.

Following the arrest of Dhiggaru constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon, Ambassador Keshap stated that "arrests and intimidation of elected legislators impedes the normal function of parliament and democracy in Maldives".
