Male’ City Council has expressed their concern over the Government’s decision to sell off land plots in capital Male’ City.

A statement released by the Council on Thursday noted that as Male’ is the most densely populated island in the nation and as such, urban planning with open spaces is critical. It also noted that Male’ City Council must be consulted on developing a plan for development projects of the city, adding that it was within the mandate of the Council to develop a development plan for the City.

The Council added that due to the restriction in land availability there were hundreds living in Male’ under dire conditions and space available for public use, such as hospitals, schools, were severely limited. Therefore, the statement said that it was deeply concerning that land plots in the City would be sold off for commercial purposes and in turn increase inequality between the citizens.

The statement expressed concern over the issue, given the lack of information available to the public.

The Council’s statement came after Government’s decision to sell off land in three areas of the capital.
