President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed members to his Cabinet of Ministers.
The appointments were made on Friday night, after the swearing-in ceremony of the new president and vice president that evening.
The cabinet ministers of the newly inaugurated administration took their oath of office during a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Friday before Supreme Court Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan.
Following their appointment, the new cabinet ministers signed the declaration of their oath and were presented their Letters of Appointment.
Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon was appointed the new administration’s Minister of Defence. He is the son of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and nephew of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. Ghassan serves as the MP for Guraidhoo constituency and studied Molecular Biology and Biomedical Sciences from London’s King's College.
Moosa Zameer was appointed the new administration’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and holds a Bachelor of Business Management attained from the University of Sunderland, as well as a Master of Business Administration from the Cardiff Metropolitan University. Zameer who also served as a tourism minister from 2015 – 2018 during the administration of ex-president Yameen, served as a parliamentarian from 2009 – 2014 as well.
Ali Ihusaan, who was appointed Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, entered into the sphere of political back in 2021 and used to serve in the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
The newly appointed Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq most recently served as the Chief Financial Officer of Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC).
Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, who was appointed as the new Minister of Education, served as a state minister for Education during ex-president Yameen’s presidential term and also served as the Dean of Islamic University of the Maldives’ Center for Research and Publication. He has also filled several positions in the education sector, including as a chemistry teacher.
The newly appointed Minister of Health, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has filled positions including the Director General of the Civil Service Commission, Secretary General of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and also as a lawmaker for Nilandhoo constituency.
Mohamed Saeed was appointed the new cabinet’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade. He most recently served as the MP for Maavah constituency and served as the economic minister from 2013 – 2018 as well.
The newly appointed Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam has been serving in parliament as the MP for Naifaru constituency.
Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed was appointed the Minister of Islamic Affairs. He has served as an Islamic Minister in the past as well. As such, he filled the position from 2012 – 2015. Shaheem was also ex-president Yameen’s running mate during the presidential elections of 2018.
The newly appointed Minister of Tourism, Ibrahim Faisal previously filled a position at the Embassy of Maldives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Dr. Aishath Shiham was appointed the new Minister of Social and Family Development and Abdulla Rafiu was appointed as the new Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation. Rafiu is a rehabilitation specialist who worked as a physician for the country’s national football team as well as other national athletes who have competed in international sporting events.
Thoriq Ibrahim, who was appointed the new Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, served as Minister of Environment during the former administration of Yameen.
Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed took his oath as the new Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development on Friday. He served a short period as Minister of Housing, during former president Maumoon’s extensive administration.
Mohamed Ameen, who was sworn in as Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, served an extensive period in the aviation sector.
Known for his expansive knowledge in Dhivehi language and literature, Adam Naseer Ibrahim was appointed the Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage.
The new Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development is Dr. Maryam Mariya, who has made several contributions to the education sector over the years.
Dr. Abdulla Muththalib signed the declaration of his oath as Minister of Construction and Infrastructure. He has a PhD in Engineering attained from University College London.
Dr. Aishath Rameela, the new Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has earlier served as a state minister for health and as a state minister of gender.
Ibrahim Waheed, a renowned figure in media, was appointed Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts. More commonly known as Asward, he is the CEO of SanguTV and earlier served a senior position at RaajjeTV as well.
Adam Shareef Umar, who was appointed the Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works in the new cabinet, served in senior positions in President Muizzu’s People’s National Congress (PNC) and most recently served as the MP for Maduvvari constituency. Further, he served as Minister of Defence during Yameen’s administration.
Alongside the 22 new cabinet ministers, Ahmed Usham was sworn in as the Attorney General. He most recently served as the MP for Villimalé constituency.
