Authorities have obstructed a pickup that was driving with authorization to announce an opposition rally.
The pickup was going around the capital Malé City, announcing the main-opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s “Fudhijje-Fundijje” rally, which roughly translates as “Enough-Destroyed”.
The rally is scheduled for Tuesday night.
The pickup which was driving around the capital inviting the public to join and providing information about the rally, was stopped by police several times on Monday.
Despite showing the permit, officers are to have checked the driver's license several times, asked numerous questions, and delayed the pickup.
During the former rule of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), police had obstructed and stopped similar rallies by MDP, pickup parades, campaign site gatherings as well as political activities organized by MDP due to pressure from the government.
The rally is scheduled to be held at the Artificial Beach on Tuesday night at 8:30pm.
Permission was obtained to host the rally which is organized by MDP, in its capacity as the main opposition party, to discuss the hardships and difficulties imposed on the people by the government and to hold the government accountable.
