Abdul Majeed Mahir, who served the state for several years, has passed away.

Abdul Majeed died at the age of 96, on Thursday evening.

He was a prominent figure in the political sphere of Maldives and in the political reform movement.

Abdul Majeed Mahir was the uncle of former President of Maldives the late Ibrahim Nasir.

He was the son of Velaanaage Mohamed Didi. His mother was Fuvahmulah Funaadu Ganduvaru Aishath Didi.

During his long service to the government, Abdul Majeed served as the Deputy of Mahakamathul Maaliyyath (Finance), Deputy Chief of Mahakamathul Aman Aammu (Public Safety), and as the President of the Malé Municipal Council from 1960-1961 during the Nasir administration.

During the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, he served as the Director of the Maldives Water and Sanitation Authority.

Among his children from his marriage to Ameena Mohamed Ameen, daughter of the Maldives' first President Mohamed Ameen, are former Defense Minister Ameen Faisal and Dr. Farahanaz Faisal, who earlier served as the Maldivian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom as well as Ambassador to France, Ireland, Spain, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Additionally, Ahmed Mahir and Mohamed Mahir, who are renowned figures in the tourism industry, are also sons of Abdul Majeed.

They were born to his marriage with Fathimath Nasira of Kolige.

Mohamed Mahir has since passed away.

Abdul Majeed was married three times, and from his marriage to Saeeda of Heera Yoosuf Fulhu, he had three children.

Abdul Majeed was an expert in traditional medicine. He has also authored books on the subject.

Following his passing, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has offered condolences. In his message, Muizzu described Abdul Majeed as a highly respected, dedicated, experienced, and strong personality among the Maldivian elders.

Taking to social media platform ‘X’, former President Mohamed Nasheed said that “Maldivians have lost one of the most valuable treasures of the country”.

Abdul Majeed was laid to rest at the Galolhu Cemetery.

His funeral prayer was held on Thursday after Isha prayer, the viewing of the late Abdul Majeed’s body was held at the Islamic Center.
