Accident near Vinares flat: car driver arrested again
Court on Sunday annulled the ruling to detain Ikram pending the end of the trial without being entitled to legal assistance
Strict action will be taken if there is negligence on the part of police in Ikram's release

The person driving the car involved in the fatal accident near Vinares Flat in Hulhumalé Phase II has been rearrested under a court order after being released by the High Court.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the suspects arrested in connection with the case are Ikram-ul Rahman and Ibrahim Ikram native to capital Malé City and Jinah Ismail, native to Kanduhulhudhoo island of Gaaf Alif atoll.

The accident took place near the Hulhumalé Phase II Vinares flat on July 31.

The Criminal Court remanded one of the suspects for 15 days on August 1 and the remaining two were remanded pending the end of their trial.

Ikram, who was driving the car involved in the crash, appealed his remand pending sentencing, at the High Court.

The court nullified the order on the grounds that he was detained in the case without being entitled to legal assistance.

On September 1, Ikram walked free.

Following public criticism, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan assured that if there was any negligence on the part of the police institution in his release, strict action would be taken against those responsible.

He revealed that the suspect was re-arrested under a court order, on Monday.

The police have also stated that the car involved in this accident in Hulhumalé was registered in Zone B. Permission to drive in Malé City is granted only to cars registered in Zone A.

The accident took place after a speeding car lost control and crashed into a motorcycle rider, waiting on the side of the road on his bike.

According to the police institution, the driver of the car initially fled the scene after the crash.

The 25-year-old suspect was arrested under a court order, later.

A video showing how the accident unfolded circulated on social media.

Stressing that the car involved in the crash was a racing car, several have poured their concerns regarding the issue of racing on the roads of the suburbs on social media.

Upon impact, the motorcycle rider was seen thrown into a distance. A plant near the sidewalk also uprooted upon impact.

Another motorcycle parked in the region was also damaged.

An eyewitness told RaajjeMV that the victim of the accident, a 27-year-old Maldivian, attained serious injuries while the three inside the car, left the scene unscathed.

Further investigations are currently underway in connection with the accident.
