Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has revealed that Mohamed Azmeel Jaleel was rushed to the hospital for treatment for injuries attained during his arrest in connection with a drug case, 16 minutes after he was taken into a custodial prison in the capital city.

HRCM revealed that they are currently working to expedite the investigation in connection with the case.

Azmeel attained injuries after falling on the road while attempting to escape from the window of his residence on 15 July 2024, after police officers arrived at the house to arrest him under a court order by the Drug Court.

The case of the suspect being rushed to the Dharumavantha Hospital for treatment was brought to HRCM’s attention by MPS.

The commission is conducting an investigation into the case, under the Anti-torture Act.

So far, information has been sought from the family and as well as the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

HRCM went on to reveal that they visited the scene of the incident and attempted to get CCTV footage, but it could not be obtained as the CCTV camera in the area was damaged.

The commission has also combed through the CCTV footage from a camera installed in the custodial facility.

HRCM stated that they have requested the police institution to provide body-worn cameras if worn by the police officers at the scene of the incident.

According to the information received so far, the family members had requested to take Azmeel to the hospital, but he was taken to the capital city’s custodial at 02:45pm the same day and handed put in a vehicle at 03:01pm to be taken to the hospital.

HRCM is working to wrap up the investigation as swiftly as possible.
