21 cases of theft from mosques have been reported so far this year

There has been an arson attempt at Jameel Didi Mosque, located in capital Malé City.

In a post on social media platform ‘X’ on Sunday, the city council revealed that someone had attempted to set fire to the door handle at the mosque.

This comes at a time the city council has been voicing concern regarding the increase in cases of theft and vandalism at mosques in the Greater Malé Region.

These cases have been brought to the attention of the public as well as the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

There has been a sudden surge in the number of crimes being committed in the capital region and the public has been voicing concern over the failure of relevant authorities in carrying out efforts to address these issues.

Earlier, the police institution revealed that 21 cases of theft from mosques have been reported so far this year.

Police said this after receiving reports of the theft of 10 fans at Eid Mosque this month.

Six fans, two mobile phones and a water meter involved in these 21 cases have been located and handed over to the owners.

The city council went on to urge the public not to steal from mosques or damage property.
