President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has stated that the Maldives Constitutional and legal system has been designed for a deadlock.
In his address on the occasion of the 52nd Independence Day, President Yameen said that this had presented the President to the public with one hand tied behind his back in performing duties of the post.
The President stated that the constitutional framework of the Maldivian system has loopholes allowing enemies of the state to meddle in governmental and state affairs. He further noted that constitutional framework introduced in 2008, is too burdensome and complicated for a country with such limited resources and man power.
The President further noted that now politicians were pursuing their own interests, instigating violence and encouraging other countries, societies and organizations to interfere in our internal affairs, all under the guise of citizen’s rights.
Noting that his mandate was to provide a solution for the issues facing the nation and create a better future for the nation, protect Islam and homogeneity of the nation. These issues we face today, President Yameen said was inherited by his administration and for now he was waging a war on these issues. As such, he said he placed more importance on serving the nation rather than responding to the baseless claims raised by the opposition.
