Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom has conveyed her greetings to the Maldives on occasion of the country’s 52nd year of independence.
She said in a statement that was published by the British Embassy to the Maldives that she wishes ‘happiness for the Maldivian people’.
“It gives me great pleasure to send Your Excellency Abdulla Yameen my congratulations on the celebration of your Independence Day, together with my best wishes for the good fortune and happiness of the people of Maldives in the coming year” the sovereign said.
Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir signed Maldives’ independence agreement with Elizabeth’s government in 1965, following dialogue in this regard between both nations and large-scale protests against the crown in the Maldives.
